How do I know if I have gastritis or an ulcer?
They are actually two different problems, but they are related since both are lesions in the stomach or duodenum. While an ulcer is actually a more or less deep “wound”, gastritis consists of an inflammation of the lining that covers the inside of the stomach. They occur when the balance between the factors capable of causing injury (such as excess acid in the stomach) and the protective mechanisms is altered.
Today it is accepted that the main factor causing some gastroduodenal diseases such as peptic ulcer is a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, so do not be surprised if your doctor gives you antibiotic treatment to try to solve this problem.
The main discomfort is the pain in the upper abdomen (“pit of the stomach”) that is usually burning (although sometimes it is dull) and is related to meals. Other possible symptoms include nausea and vomiting, abdominal “heaviness,” “slow digestion,” loss of appetite, etc.
